Hosting the China International Import Expo (CIIE) is a significant opening-up initiative personally planned, proposed, deployed, and promoted by President Xi Jinping. Over the past seven years, with active participation and strong support from the international community, the CIIE has been successfully held continuously. Its quality and efficiency have been consistently improved, and its international influence has expanded more widely. Its role of serving as the platform of international procurement, investment promotion, people-to-people exchange, and open cooperation has become increasingly prominent, making it a window for China to build a new development paradigm, a platform for promoting high-level opening-up, and an international public good shared globally. It demonstrates China’s firm determination to expand high-level opening-up, share development opportunities, and promote economic globalization.
The China International Import Expo (CIIE) is the world’s first national-level expo with import as its theme, and major declaration and action of China’s initiative to open its market to the world. In May 2017, President Xi Jinping announced that China would host the China International Import Expo from 2018. Since then, the CIIE has been held annually from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai, China as scheduled.
With active participation and strong support from the international community, the CIIE has been successfully held for seven consecutive years, playing a role as a platform for international procurement, investment promotion, cultural exchange, and open cooperation . Its quality and efficiency have been significantly improved, and its international influence has expanded more widely. It has become a showcase of China's new development paradigm, a platform for high-standard opening-up, and a public good for the whole world.
Over the past seven years, the CIIE has attracted participants from 180 countries and regions, with around 23,000 enterprise exhibitions. Approximately 3,000 representative new products, technologies, and services have been showcased, with the intended transaction amount surpassing USD 500 billion. The CIIE is a vivid practice that demonstrates China's firm commitment to advancing high-level opening-up, and we hope that through such practices, China's vast market will become a shared market for the world.
The CIIE consists of Country Exhibition, Enterprise & Business Exhibition, Hongqiao International Economic Forum, and professional supporting and people-to-people exchange activities.
1.Country Exhibition
The Comprehensive Country Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as the Country Exhibition) is a platform showcasing the comprehensive image of participating countries. It invites willing countries and international organizations to flexibly display their comprehensive images through various means, including investment environment, tourism resources, advantageous industries, specialty products, and the outcomes of cooperative projects. The Country Exhibition closely connects participating countries to promote China-foreign trade cooperation, stimulate the growth of exports to China, boost the local tourism economy, and attract investment to China. Over the past seven years, a total of 150 countries and international organizations from five continents have participated in the Country Exhibition.
2.Enterprise & Business Exhibition
The Enterprise & Business Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as the Business Exhibition ) provides an international platform for overseas enterprises to introduce their products, technologies, and services to the Chinese market and meet domestic needs. It has a "double overseas" characteristic, which means that both exhibitors and exhibits must come from overseas. Adhering to the concept of "holding the comprehensive exhibition professionally", the Business Exhibition features six major exhibition areas: Food and Agricultural Products Exhibition Area, Automobile and Smart Mobility Exhibition Area , Intelligent Industry & Information Technology Exhibition Area, Consumer Goods Exhibition Area, Medical Equipment & Healthcare Products Exhibition Area, and Trade in Services Exhibition Area. Over the past seven years, enterprises from over 180 countries and regions have participated, including many Fortune 500 enterprises and industry leaders. For example, in recent editions, the Food and Agricultural Products Exhibition Area featured the world's top four grain traders and three major seed enterprises. The Automobile and Smart Mobility Exhibition Area featured the top 15 global automobile enterprises by brand value. The Intelligent Industry & Information Technology Exhibition Area featured the top 10 industrial electrical enterprises and three major mining giants. The Consumer Goods Exhibition Area featured the world's top three fashion giants, three major auction houses, and 10 major cosmetics brands. The Medical Equipment & Healthcare Products Exhibition Area covered the top 15 pharmaceutical giants and 10 major medical device enterprises. The Trade in Services Exhibition Area gathered a large number of top enterprises, showcasing the latest achievements in sub-fields such as financial investment and digital transformation, including the top three global express delivery enterprises and four major accounting firms.
In addition to the six major exhibition areas mentioned above, the Business Exhibition also sets up an Innovation Incubation Special Section, aiming to provide global small and micro enterprises with the opportunity to showcase their creativity and promote their products in China. The Innovation Incubation Special Section currently accepts applications from seed-stage, startup-stage, and growth-stage unlisted growing and innovative enterprises. Considering the needs of enterprise development, the special section offers more favorable booth prices. Additionally, exhibitors can participate for free in award events and forum activities in the special section.
The 7th CIIE covered an exhibition area of more than 420,000 square meters and featured exhibitors from 152 countries and regions, as well as international organizations. Notably, 77 countries and international organizations participated in the Country Exhibition, with France, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan designated as Guest Countries of Honor. The Business Exhibition welcomed 3,496 exhibitors from 129 countries and regions, which surpassed the numbers from the previous edition. Additionally, the participation of Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders reached a record high of 297.
In addition to direct registration, CIIE cooperates extensively with global international organizations, trade and investment promotion institutions from various countries (regions), and business associations to support and encourage the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises and enterprises in characteristic industries by organizing group exhibitions, facilitating their participation in the CIIE in China. Each group is allocated to specific exhibition areas and special section based on their respective industries. A special trade matchmaking area tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises within the groups was set up during the exhibition period to enhance their effectiveness in participating.
In addition to exhibitor organizers, there is also an exhibitor alliance mechanism for the Enterprise Exhibition. Since its first edition, exhibitors have spontaneously formed an enterprise alliance, holding annual forums, sharing sessions, thematic activities, etc., and inviting member enterprises to actively offer suggestions and advice on topics such as expanding imports and promoting investment. Under the alliance, 15 professional committees have been established to engage in various forms of exchanges on industry development trends, explore cooperation, and boost mutual development.
3. Hongqiao International Economic Forum
Hongqiao International Economic Forum (hereinafter referred to as the Hongqiao Forum) focuses on promoting global openness, assisting in improving global economic governance, and addressing hot topics in global open cooperation. It provides a high-end dialogue and communication platform for the international political, business, and academic communities, offering suggestions for building an open world economy and a community with a shared future for humanity. The Hongqiao Forum strives to match top international forums and has cooperation with several international organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Since the fourth edition, it has been publishing the World Openness Report and the World Openness Index, and gradually becoming a bellwether for global common opening-up, a barometer of China’s high-level opening-up, and an authoritative brand of the Hongqiao Forum.
The Hongqiao Forum implements a membership system. Currently, there are 29 member companies, including 18 diamond members, 10 platinum members, and one elite member, covering industries such as equipment manufacturing, electronic information, chips, energy, medicine, agriculture, consumer goods, and finance.
4. Professional supporting and people-to-people exchange activities
President Xi Jinping pointed out: “The China International Import Expo trades goods and services, exchanges culture and ideas, welcomes guests from all over the world, seeks the common good of all, and meets the aspirations of people from all countries for a better life”. The CIIE not only showcases goods, technologies, and services but also cultural activities and performances; it involves both procurement negotiation and transaction as well as investment project matchmaking. Professional supporting and people-to-people exchange activities aim to build a dialogue platform between government and enterprises, deepen the integration of economy, trade, and culture, and promote exchanges and mutual learning of human civilizations. Professional supporting activities include policy interpretation, matchmaking signings, investment promotion, and other types. People-to-people exchange activities include displays of diverse intangible cultural heritage projects and both Chinese and foreign culture performances.
Deeper Political-Business Exchanges: Dignitaries from various countries, heads of international organizations, global business leaders, experts, scholars, and representatives from all levels of domestic governments attend the CIIE each year. They voice their opinions at the Hongqiao Forum and other high-level supporting events. Every year, exhibitors are invited to participate in the “CIIE Entering the Local Areas” events and visit provinces and cities across China. These events serve as investment and trade matchmaking platforms between exhibitors and localities, with the focus on local characteristic industries and key sectors of interest. Throughout the year, the enterprise alliance organizes political-business dialogue activities, jointly exploring industry innovation and development visions and government industrial policies, actively providing suggestions, and conveying industry voices.
Strong Audience Base: Through the "government + market" dual-drive investment promotion mechanism, 39 government trade missions and four industry trade missions have been established. These missions span a wide range of regions, industries, and sectors, attracting influential enterprises with strong purchasing power from various locations to participate in the exhibition.
Efficient Procurement Matchmaking: The fifth CIIE launched the digital CIIE platform for the first time, providing efficient and precise matchmaking for exhibitors and purchasers through targeted invitations and real-time multi-person negotiations. The sixth CIIE introduced the “Supply and Procurement Hall” online featuring four distinctive functions: information release, trade matchmaking, activity matchmaking, and itinerary arrangement, which facilitates “online matchmaking” for exhibitors and purchasers. Offline activities such as special procurement matchmaking meetings and investment promotion roadshows in major Chinese cities help exhibitors and purchasers interact accurately and face to face.
Effective Brand Promotion: The CIIE attracts thousands of domestic and foreign media reporters for interviews and coverage each year, with the online media information reaching millions of pieces and the exposure reaching billions of views. It serves as an excellent platform for enterprises to enhance brand awareness. We co-hosted the CIIE new product launch event of with China Media Group to provide a platform for exhibitors to debut new products, technologies and services, and to further enhance the influence of brand communication.
Convenient Policy Support: Each year, relevant departments of the Chinese government implement a series of support policies for the CIIE, including facilitation of entry for exhibitors and purchasers, tax incentives for retained purchases of exhibits, and intellectual property protection, making participation and exhibition easier and turning exhibits into commodities more conveniently.
The 8th CIIE will be held from November 5 to 10, 2025, at National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). It will continue to consist of the Country Exhibition, the Business Exhibition, Hongqiao International Economic Forum, professional supporting and people-to-people exchange activities.
